Loading an XV-2020 rhythm set
into Logic Environment
Prerequisite
- You have created a Roland layer (We named it Roland_2) in the Environment and that layer contains a mapped-instrument drum kit. If you have not done this, here's how.
Procedure
- In Logic's Environment window, go to the Roland_2 layer, and double-click on the mapped-intrument icon (We named this PR-A1 Drums earlier). A rhythm-set window (named "PR-A1 Drums") should open.
At the left of this window, you see a keyboard aligned vertically. Beside each key is either the key's name (C3, C#3, etc.) or the name of a percussion instrument assigned to that key (snare, ride bell, etc.).
- You now have the delightful job of entering the percussion-instrument names into the array beside the keyboard. We named this mapped instrument for Program 001 of the synth's Preset-A Group (R&B drum kit). On page 131 of the XV-2020 Owner's Manual is the list assigning percussion instruments to the keyboard.
Note: In Logic's rhythm-set window, the vertically aligned keyboard is oriented from high frequencies (G8 at top) down to low frequencies (C2 at bottom). However, on pages 130-134 of the XV-2020 Owner's Manual, the keyboards are positioned from low frequencies (F1 at top) down to high frequencies (G7 at bottom). Well, you didn't want things to be too easy, did you?
- As you enter the names, be sure to do a Save several times during the process -- and be sure to Save (with the bank window open) when you've entered all the names.
Note: In Roland equipment, the convention for naming keys is based on C4 = middle C; in contrast, Yamaha equipment uses C3 = middle C. If your keystation (like an M-Audio) uses the Yamaha convention, then when you enter the instrument names from page 131 of the XV-2020 manual, an instrument will sound at the key one octave lower on your keystation. For example, in the XV-2020 manual (page 131), C4 = Bongo Hi; but to get the Bongo Hi sound from the M-Audio keystation, you depress C3.
- We now need to create the MIDI controller messages that will be sent to the XV-2020, so we don't have to set the XV-2020 by hand for each track.
- Close the rhythm-set window and return to the Roland_2 layer of Logic's Environment window.
- Select the icon for PS-A1 R&B Kit.
- In the window's drop-down menu, select Options --> Define Custom Bank Messages. We get a new window, much like a MIDI Event window.
- The XV-2020 Owner's Manual (page 41) shows that, to select a rhythm set, we need to send two controller messages: one to controller 0 (MSB) and another to controller 32 (LSB). Here are the messages to be assigned to bank numbers in Logic and entered into the Bank-Select Message window.
| XV-2020 Bank | Logic Bank Number | MSB Value | LSB Value |
| USER | 6 | 86 | 00
|
| PST-A | 7 | 86 | 64
|
| PST-B | 8 | 86 | 65
|
| GM | 9 | 120 | 00
|
- From these, load the appropriate pair of MSB and LSB values into the Bank-Select Message window. Editing the window is just like editing a MIDI Event window. You may copy and paste to create two message lines for each bank; label them (a) and (b). Here's what you should have if you use bank = 7 for the PS-A1 R&B Kit:
- Close the Bank-Select Message window and return to the Environment window. Click on the icon for PS-A1 R&B Kit. Check in the left panel that Channel = 10, Program box is checked with bank = 7, and program = 0.
- Caution: Counting in the XV-2020 is relative to base unity (1, 2, 3, 4, . . . ), but counting in Logic Express is relative to base zero (0, 1, 2, 3, . . .). So, to get the R&B Kit in Preset-A, which is program "001", we must send a MIDI program number "000". Therefore, you would set the bank number to the value you chose for Preset-A rhythm sets (we chose bank = 7 in this tutorial), but set the Program Number = "0", not "1".
- Close the Environment window. You can now assign the rhythm set R&B kit (Preset A, Program number 001) to tracks in Logic's Arrange window. Here's how.
Note
You must create a separate mapped-instrument and repeat the above process for each drum kit you wish to access from Logic. For example, the Preset-A bank contains four drum kits (page 131 of the Owner's Manual); therefore, to use all four, you would create four mapped-instruments.
