Setting Up Logic Environment
for XV-2020 Rhythm Sets

  1. Power up the XV-2020 synth.
  2. Open Logic Express 7.
  3. In the top drop-down menu, Windows --> Environment.
  4. In the name box in the left side bar, select the layer "Roland_2" that you created in an earlier part of this tutorial.
  5. Create a new mapped instrument by selecting Mapped Instrument from the layer's drop-down menu: New --> Mapped Instrument. A mapped-instrument icon appears in the layer.
  6. Give the new mapped-instrument a name.
    1. Click once on the new mapped-instrument to select it. A new panel appears in the left side bar.
    2. In the side bar, click once on (Mapped Instr.) and type in a name; e.g., if you plan to assign the XV-2020's rhythm set R&B Kit from bank Preset-A, you might name the new instrument "PS-A1 R&B Kit".
  7. Select the mapped-instrument and in the left side bar set Channel = 10.
  1. With the multi-instrument still selected, in the left side bar select Port = Roland XV-2020. Here's what you should have at this point:

  2. If you have already loaded a rhythm set from XV-2020 into an Environment bank, you can set the bank number in the left side bar by checking the Program box, then clicking on the hyphen. Otherwise, here are instructions for loading a bank.
Caution:

Counting in the XV-2020 is relative to base unity (1, 2, 3, 4, . . . ), but counting in Logic Express is relative to base zero (0, 1, 2, 3, . . .). So, to get the R&B Kit in Preset-A, which is program "001", we must send a MIDI program number "000". Therefore, you would set the bank number to the value you chose for Preset-A rhythms sets, but set the Program Number = "0", not "1".
